Student Model United Nations - March 1, 2002AIDS Model UN

Twenty years after the first case was reported, HIV/AIDS has become the most devastating disease humankind has ever faced. Globally, there are over 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS -- 11.7 million are children and young people. HIV/AIDS is now the leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa and the fourth leading cause of death worldwide.

In Articles 17, 24 and 28 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, member nations recognize children have the right to access health information and to the highest attainable standard of health and education. Yet, each day 7,000 young people--between the ages of 15 and 24--become infected with HIV. Most of them do not know they carry the virus. Millions of them know too little about HIV/AIDS to protect themselves against it.

Leading experts joined Peel students to learn how to respond to the global AIDS crisis. The Model UN featured presentations by:

Sisonke Msimang
Program Specialist on Youth, Gender and HIV/AIDS, United Nations Women's Development Fund

Alex MacKenzie
Program Manager, International Programs Department,
UNICEF Canada
